Providing a unified voice concerning issues which enhance, affect, or threaten the equestrian lifestyles in Orange County
Brenda Kalb has been an active member of the equine community since moving to California in 1980. Brenda grew up on the East Coast, Massachusetts to be exact. She boarded a horse when she was 12 and was able to ride it as she desired for the winter, however, when summer and good weather arrived, she had to send the horse back to pull the ice cream wagon in New Bedford.
When she was 14 she got her first horse, a buckskin gelding from “out West” somewhere. He and Brenda hit the 4-H shows and all the other fun shows in the area, and they became quite a recognizable combo.
With age came responsibilities like having to work for a living, so when her first horse died, she spent some time without a 4 legged friend. Some time after a wedding engagement gone bad, she decided to go to Spain for a vacation. She ended up staying 9 years. During that time she worked at Torrejon Air Force Base outside of Madrid and that is where she acquired her next horse, a Bay Andalusian who was trained for the Bull Ring. She was able to learn a great deal from this steed. He did the Spanish Walk and other assorted dressage moves and the more Brenda rode him, the more she learned from him.
Then Brenda’s Knight in Shining Armor arrived – and the horse was sold when she moved up to El Ferrol in the Northern part of Spain. From Spain her husband, a Navy man, was transferred to Hawaii. From Hawaii she relocated in Garden Grove as her husband’s next tour of duty was Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair in Long Beach.. They then found a house in Anaheim Hills that came fully equipped with a three stall barn and turn outs for each stall. That was the selling point for Brenda – now all she needed was her Morgan (long time Breed of choice).
The search for that perfect horse led her to Cherry Valley where she purchased her first Morgan, Aggie. Aggie soon was bred and produced a lovely Bay gelding who is now a member of the Orange County Sheriff’s department. Brenda has been in the Rose Parade twice with Aggie and still is trying to get to ride down Colorado Blvd. once more, but so far the Morgans have not been chosen again.
Brenda now has three Morgans, Aggie who is now 28 and Genesis 7 and Bella who will be 2 in February. Genesis is her main ride now and their favorite pastime is camping – anywhere she can get to. Some of her adventures have taken her to the Sequoia National Forest (twice), Moro Bay, Mammoth, Cuyamaca, Joshua Tree and Arizona. She has many adventure stories to tell you when you sit around the camp fire.
Brenda Kalb now lives in Anaheim Hills and is an active member of the Anaheim Hills Equestrians, ETI #357 (Saddleback Canyon Riders), Nuview Fun Riders and the Rubideau Riders. She is a member and the current Secretary of The Morgan Horse Club of Southern California and has been on the Board of that Club many times, including terms as President, Treasurer and Secretary). She is also a member of the American Morgan Horse Association and is a member of the Morgan Horse Breeders & Exhibitors Association. She is also a key member of the show committee who chairs the “June Classic”, Class A Show held yearly at Pomona Fairgrounds.
Brenda currently works part time in the office of Orange County Equine Veterinary Services in Lake Forest.
Brenda has been with the Equestrian Coalition of Orange County since its inception in 1996. She has served on the Board since the beginning and is now Treasurer and also serves as Secretary “pro tem”.
